Captain Carrot and the Final Ark!

One of my favorite comics when i was a kid was Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew, which took place on a world where animals talk and behave like people, and people were like bigfoot and aliens... one of the best things about Zoo Crew was the great use of humor. all the cities had names like Piggsburg and Gnu York, and there were lots of puns and one-liners. still, there was plenty of slapstick superhero action as well. i didn't buy every issue of Zoo Crew, but i was still disappointed when it got canceled.
So imagine my surprise when i saw Captain Carrot and the Final Ark at my local comic shop! Final Ark picks up in the aftermath of previous Zoo Crew storylines, but i didn't read those books, and i still liked it. in a parody of current Marvel storylines, Final Ark opens in a world where superheroes are banned by the "Collar I.D. Initiative," and the Zoo Crew has long since disbanded. but when villains like the Salamandroid, Frogzilla and Starro the Conqueror attack, the Zoo Crew reunite to stop them!
Captain Carrot and the Final Ark
(a 3 issue Limited Series from DC Comics) is a good comic for kids who like humor or action, as it has plenty of both.

  1. Bring CC and the Crew back! There's room for them in the New 52! I loved them at 16, and now at 46...STILL love them!!!

  3. They are one of the best super-teams in comics. Right up there with the JLA, Fantastic Four, Avengers, if you ask me!

  4. It was NOT your typical funny-animal superhero comic at all. Humor, puns were there, but good characterization, and even serious parts too.
DC seems to be ashamed of them, at least in my opinion.

  5. Yes. Zoo Crew was good satire from a company that doesn't like to admit it has a sense of humor. It seems like humor is a little more welcome in comics now than it was in the nineties and early 2000s, so hopefully the Zoo Crew will make a comeback!

  6. One can hop...uh, hope, I mean! I have the whole run of CC, plus The Oz-Wonderland War!
And of course,The Final Ark! I was very mad at the ending of FA, to be honest. Cap and company got me into superhero comics as a teen. Cap and Fastback are the members I liked most. I can relate to the knocks and victories they had.

  7. Pig-Irpn reminded me of The Thing. Similar speech, but Pig-Iron didn't have the hangups that ol' Benjy has. He loved having his powers!

  8. I liked Rubberduck only after he stopped insulting Fastback. Also, I would've liked to see a romance bloom between Cap and Alley-Kat-Abra. Shame about Little Cheese, though. Yankee Poodle was a big snob. Abra was likable, but I thought the writers made her goof up too much. She's smart, funny, and friendly, and the most powerful member.

  9. DC should bring this book back AND do spin-off minis for each of the characters. Zoo 52!

  10. Heh! Cool! Have Superman "return" to Earth-26, and meet the team. With Little Cheese and American Eagle as members!

  11. Who was your favorite villian? I liked Aromordillo,The Wuz-Wolf, Salamandroid, Fatkat, and the Bunny from Beyond. Dr. Hoot could have been good, too. Oh, yeah. Frogzilla, too! Gorilla Grodd, was top- notch.

  13. I wish that Cap, Pig-Iron,and Yankee Poodle had more than one solo story. I wish CC had another crack at Digger O'Doom! I AM a Zooophile, huh? Heh,heh!

  15. CC#14-15 "Crisis on Earth-C and Earth-C Minus! Absolutely great! A certain Chiptonian rodent with an"S" on his chest was a bit of a jerk,I thought! Batmouse acted just like the Dark Knight!

  16. I think CC was one of those things in pop culture that was in a unique place. Humor, satire, but done in a way that was fond of the superhero genre. It was multi-leveled. As said, NOT your typical funny-animal-superhero comic!

  17. Right. It's a testament to what a publisher like DC can do when they relax and let creative people have fun.

  18. Even though you don't see him much,Mavel doesn't seem to be ashamed of Howard the Duck!
I like him, too. The movie was lousy, but he's still part of the Marvel Universe! What's da deal, DC?

  19. I once read a post about CC. The writer called it a"kiddie" book. Kids could enjoy it,but sharp adults could as well.

    1. Right. In today's comics market, where most of the comics are NOT really suitable for youngsters, it's kind of a selling point when you make a book that is even acceptable for children. As a creator of such a book, I can say that it's easy to slip into calling it a "kiddie" comic, when most of my readers are actually adults who just like fun comics.

  20. I've read some comments by fellow CC fans about The Final Ark. A lot of 'em were angry. I sure was! Someone told me about Final Crisis, where they take part in the ending battle, with powers and forms restored. I bought the hardcover book of the whole miniseries, just to see them!
